Swingtown on CBS
With slumping ratings, CBS’
controversial new show, Swingtown (Thursdays, 10:00 p.m.) has failed to
win over viewers. It has, however, been named Worst TV Show of the Week
for the second time in its short run. Set in the mid-1970s, the July 10th
episode entitled, “Friends with Benefits,” featured more of the graphic
depictions of sex and suburban ennui that millions of Americans have come to
ignore.
The episode opened with Tom
and Trina Decker at an airport bar playing the game, “Guess Who My Spouse Would
Sleep With” while they waited for Tom’s plane to depart. The game ended as soon
as Trina’s high school sweetheart, Luke, walked through the door. Tom wrestled
with his jealousy through most of the episode -- until Trina finally soothed his
insecurities just enough for him to engage in a threesome with her former beau.
The episode’s closing musical montage featured a tangle of legs in satin sheets,
as the camera panned up to show Tom kissing his wife’s shoulders as she engages
with Luke.
Perhaps less graphic, though
no less provocative, was the subplot involving 17-year-old high school student,
Laurie Miller, and her “former” teacher, Mr. Stevens. With the conclusion of
summer school, Mr. Stevens deemed it appropriate to reciprocate Laurie’s amorous
feelings. While she removed items from the classroom bulletin board, he
embraced her from behind and the two kissed passionately. Apparently, these
extracurricular activities are fine as long as class isn’t in session anymore.
For its graphic sexual
depictions, Swingtown deserves the title Worst TV Show of the Week.
