Don’t Forget the Lyrics on FOX

By Ally Matteodo

The title of Best TV Show of the Week goes to the Fox network’s Don’t Forget the Lyrics!, which aired on September 19th at 9:00 p.m. ET. A game show hosted by Wayne Brady which tests individual’s knowledge of song lyrics, the program features nine different categories of songs which vary from week to week. On this episode, some of the categories were “My Hometown,” “Driving Songs,” “Whitney Houston,” and “Rock Anthems.”  The contestant chooses a category and then the band begins to play the song.  The individual must sing with the aid of the song lyrics projected on a giant screen.  However, at some point during the song, the music drops out and the individual must finish the lyrics on their own.  As the game continues and the stakes grow higher, the number of words the individual must fill in grow longer.  The contestants ultimately have a chance to make it to the “Million Dollar Song” – if they are able to fill in the lyrics, they win the million-dollar grand prize.  On the September 19th episode, two sisters, Jenny and Allison, competed against one another. Jenny, a flight attendant, was scheduled to move to London the next day, and the program was their last chance for them to spend time together.  Due to the special circumstances Wayne Brady allowed the sisters to play together as a team.  The sisters end up winning $200,000 before they called it quits.

This particular episode of Don’t Forget the Lyrics highlighted the bond between the sisters.  Jenny avowed that Allison was her best friend and that she would miss her once she moved to London.  One of the main goals for the girls participating in the show was to win enough money so that they could own homes in both London and the United States, so the two could still see each other often.  Their confidence and trust in each other was endearing as the two braved the competition together.  It was amusing and touching to watch the two sisters rocking out together.  Some of the songs they had to complete included “Suspicious Minds” by Elvis, “Didn’t We Almost Have it All” by Whitney Houston, “Jumpin’ Jack Flash” by the Rolling Stones, and “Here I Go Again On My Own” by Whitesnake.  The girls stopped once they reached the song “Everlasting Love,” since they were uncertain about the lyrics.  Wayne Brady is an engaging host whose dynamic smile always encourages the contestants, and the audience also adds to the aura of excitement of the show.  There are few things in life that are as pleasant to watch as two sisters crooning their hearts out to the cheers of an appreciative audience.
